It is an alarming statistic but it is a reality unfortunately here in New Zealand. Access to most public AED Defibrillator is very limited particularly during after hours.
Having a AED Defibrillator handy can truely SAVE YOUR LIFE particularly if a person having a cardiac arrest (Ventricular Fibrillator or referred to as VF) is able to be defibrillated within 1 minute - CHANCE OF SURVIVAL IS APPROX 90%.
Unfortunately every minute delay sadly reduces the chances of survival for the person suffering Cardiac Arrest by approx 10% per minute delay.
The average response time for Emergency Services to attend to a cardiac arrest call is 6 - 9 MINUTES in New Zealand. This delay decreases the chances of survival hugely based on reduced survival rates stated (survival rate decreates by 10% every minute).
The answer maybe to have better access to AEDs in the community, initiatives for Private & Public companies to purchase AEDs for staff onsite and ultimately every family having some sort of access to an AED in the neighbourhood.
